Spouse visa

Spouse visa Canada Process

The Canadian government's dedication to keeping immigrant families together is demonstrated through the Spouse visa Canada. Citizens and permanent residents of Canada who are over the age of majority, i.e. 18 years, can sponsor dependent family members such as spouses, children, parents, grandparents, and common-law partners via the Spouse Visas Canada and Dependent Visas Canada programmes.

The Spouse Visa Canada programme allows PR visa holders and citizens of Canada to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner who is currently residing outside of Canada to apply for immigration and live in the country. The Canadian government defines marital arrangements in the following ways for the purposes of this visa:

  • A spouse is someone you've officially married according to your religious traditions and registered with your city's civic authorities.
  • A Common-Law Partner is someone with whom you have been in a continuous conjugal relationship for at least one year, with exceptions made for short journeys for family or business. You should be able to show that you and your partner live in the same house.
  • A conjugal partner is someone with whom you have a common-law relationship but have not lived together for a year or who you are unable to marry due to rules in your own country.
